About the event

“Nothing short of spellbinding…”- The Washington Post

The Summer Solstice is the longest day and shortest night of the year, and was celebrated throughout the Celtic world as the peak of the Sun’s awesome power. Come hear the award-winning Maryland/Virginia Celtic ensemble, the OCEAN Celtic Quartet, in a program of traditional and original music celebrating the mystery and symbolism of the Sun. OCEAN’s soaring vocals, fiery fiddle tunes, and rollicking button accordion will have your heart swelling and your toes tapping, while you sing along with songs that stretch back for centuries, and even a few that hail from the groovy 1960s. Along with the music, there will be 19th-century Gaelic folk poetry, and a special guest appearance by the ancient Green Man, also known as Jack-in-the-Green. The audience will have many opportunities to join in on the singing and merriment, to be sure!

OCEAN’s members are bandleader/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jennifer Cutting (a Washington Area Music Association “Musician of the Year”); mesmerizing Eastern Shore vocalist Chris Noyes (formerly of the maritime music group Crab Alley); champion Scottish fiddler Seán Heely; and traditional singer / Ph.D. folklorist Stephen Winick.

Come along with us for this joyful celebration to mark the peak of the year’s light and warmth. Join the fun by wearing Sun colors: yellows, golds, oranges, reds, or anything tie-dye… bring your own drum or other percussion instrument to play along on select songs and chants… and sing along on sun-kissed choruses!
