WHAT IS A "MAIN STREET" ANYWAY?
The National Main Street Center was established as a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1980 as a way to address the myriad issues facing older and historic downtowns during that time. Working with a nationwide network of coordinating programs and local communities, Main Street has helped over 2,000 communities across the country bring economic vitality back downtown, while celebrating their historic character, and bringing communities together.
Barracks Row Main Street offers a comprehensive suite of events to bring "feet to the street" throughout the year. Focusing on a variety of demographics from young singles to families to empty-nesters, it is part of our mission to help bring customers to the front door of every Barracks Row business. Learn more about our events here or check our homepage for our upcoming activities!
The Economic Vitality of our commercial corridor is critical to the success of all of our businesses. From working on major projects like the Eastern Market Metro Park and mitigating the impact of large-scale construction like the recent CSX Virginia Avenue Tunnel project to one-on-one consultations with business owners to discuss Business Health Checks and lease negotiations, we are at work every day helping ensure the continued Economic Vitality of 8th Street SE.
The "Design" point supports a community’s transformation by enhancing the physical and visual assets that set the commercial district apart. Barracks Row is fortunate to have the street covered by a historic district overlay that protects the integrity of our historic buildings - but protecting them alone isn't enough! Barracks Row Main Street works to help building owners with facade repairs, our Clean Team on keeping the street spotless, and on public space infrastructure repairs with the city.
The "Organization" point involves creating a strong foundation for a sustainable revitalization effort, including cultivating partnerships, community involvement, and resources for the district. One of the other key elements of Organization is fundraising - we receive no dues or fees or assessments as an organization, so please consider sponsoring one of our events or making a donation to our efforts!
HOW DO I JOIN BARRACKS ROW MAIN STREET?
Great news! All businesses located within our service district - which includes all the blocks between 7th Street SE to the west, 9th Street SE to the east, the Eastern Market Metro Park to the north, and the Latrobe Gate to the Washington Navy Yard to the south - are already members! Remember, we don't have any membership fees, dues, or assessments. Email us today and let us help you determine how to best get involved and get the most out of your local Main Street district!
HOW MUCH WILL ALL THIS COST ME?
Like all other DC Main Streets programs, Barracks Row Main Street does not levy any dues, fees, assessments or fines. You read that correctly - all of our services to building and business owners are provided completely free of charge. We rely on voluntary contributions and grant funding to do our work, so if you find the services we provide valuable, please consider donating today!
AREN'T YOU PART OF THE CAPITOL HILL BID?
While we do often partner with the Capitol Hill BID, especially on our supplemental Clean Team services, the BID and Barracks Row Main Street are separate organizations with different Boards, different service areas, and different missions.
