PUBLIC SPACE MANAGEMENT
Care for our public realm is a key part of the "Design" element of the Main Street Four Point Approach. Did you know that Barracks Row Main Street invests over $100,000 every year on supplemental Clean Team services for Barracks Row from the "Men in Blue" with Capitol Hill BID's Ready, Willing, and Working program and employs three formerly homeless or incarcerated individuals to provide these services?
In addition to regular 7-day a week business improvement district services, the Barracks Row Main Street has a 3-member clean team dedicated solely to 8th Street from Pa Avenue to M Street during peak traffic days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday; 30 public space planters and 22 light pole baskets maintained with seasonally-appropriate plants and flowers; and, periodic power washing of sidewalks.
Barracks Row Main Street runs a robust Facade Improvement Program! Read all about it, and download the application, here.
Have you seen our beautiful hanging baskets that overflow with petunias every summer and fall? Those are provided through a special partnership with the Capitol Hill BID, who plants and maintains them only within the Main Street District.
After many years of lobbying, and some patch work last year, Barracks Row Main Street has been successful in getting DDOT to commit to come out and reset ALL of our iconic slate pavers in concrete, which prevents them from cracking or shifting. This work should start on Wednesday, August 15th!
Read the notice from DDOT about the project here. Know that the intention is to start on the west side of the 400 block and work going south, all the way to M Street, and then to shift to the east side at M Street and start working back to the north, ending on the 400 block again.
