Funding Restored for Main Streets in DC Budget

Clean TeamAfter hours of testimony from Main Street Executive Directors, Board members, and Clean Team members during December’s hearings about Main Streets serving as “economic engines” for the District and generating much-needed tax revenues, DC Main Street programs anxiously awaited the outcome of the budget process. It is with great joy that we can now report that funding for both Main Streets and the Clean Teams has been restored! Barracks Row Main Street would like to thank the City Council and the Mayor’s Office for recognizing the value of our Main Street and others throughout the city.

This funding is critical to the success of all DC Main Streets programs, and especially to Barracks Row. Our Main Street grant provides for critical operating support and funding for our business retention and recruitment programs. Without it, the cutbacks would have been severe.

The Clean Team funding pays for supplementary services above and beyond what the Capitol Hill BID provides. This grant keeps three formerly homeless/incarcerated individuals employed while simultaneously beautifying and maintaining Barracks Row. Thousands of bags of trash and dozens of graffiti tags are removed with this crucial funding. Just this fall, BRMS used some of these funds to support the “Men in Blue” to plant hundreds of bulbs in treeboxes to bring color and vibrancy to the Row this spring and every spring hereafter.

Our work, however, is far from finished! Please show your support for Barracks Row Main Street by clicking “Donate” above and making a contribution through Network for Good. There’s always something happening on the Row, and we need these dollars to be able to continue helping the Row to grow.
