4th of July Parade 2012 Album

4th of July 2012 was sunny and hot but the Capitol Hill 4th of July Parade on Barracks Row drew big attendance and a record number of marchers. Here are some shots of the day starting with Tommy Wells, the Grand Marshal,l and followed by the Commandant's Own Drum and Bugle Corp.

It's All Good in the Hood was a group of 10th Street, SE, neighbors; David and Danette Sheldon led a group from their Military Defense organization,512 8th Street, SE; the Girl Scouts were out in record number and the contestants from all 50 of the Miss United States pageants brought their beauty and grace to the celebration.

The parade was full of kids, dogs, wagons and fun. We'll add more pictures to the 2012 4th of July Album next week.

4th of July Parade 2012 Update

The 11th annual Barracks Row Fourth of July Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, 2012. The parade route begins at the 295-395 overpass (at 8th and I Streets, SE) and ends at the Eastern Market Metro Plaza. The parade will take one hour from start to finish.

This year there are two Co-Grand Marshalls: DC Council Member Tommy Wells and Police Captain Taggert. The marchers will be led by The Commandant's Own Drum and Bugle Corps who will be followed by the winners of all regions of the Miss US Pageant. Many local groups including Princesses Patrols, shown here, Super Heroes and car clubs participate every year.

If your group plans to participate call Sharon Boesen at 202-543-5755 at Tiber Creek Associates www.tiberdc.com.  There is no charge to march but planners would like to know for organizational purposes who will be in the parade.

The parade is sponsored in part by Tiber Creek Associates of Capitol Hill and Masons Naval Lodge No. 4. The parade is co sponsored by Barracks Row Main Street, CSX, The Hill Rag, Bob Bergman and The National Community Church.

Photos From Garden Party '12

We have begun to receive photos from Garden Party 2012; in the next few days more photos will be posted. We tented the garden in anticipation of afternoon showers which never materialized; but as you can see, the tents created a magical effect that continued on into early evening.

Many thanks to the Garden Party Host Committee, lead by Cynthia Jones and to Tip and Connie Tipton who generously hosted the event at historic Deer House.

At the party our guests were able to Meet the Chefs - 5 restaurants on 8th Street sent their chefs to present their best new dishes. Senart's Oyster and Chop House served poached shrimp, oysters and cold watermelon soup; Spring Mill Bread served their winning brownies along with mini sandwiches and cakes; The Sweet Lobby, recent winner of the Food Network's Cup Cake Wars,  shared their newly invented dessert, MacTops - a macaron/cupcake combination as well as their signature eclairs and cookies; Nooshi Sushi, shown below served a variety of sushi and rolls, and Tash served grilled kebabs. Nooshi Sushi and Tash will be opening  late summer, 2012.
