Award-winning pet store opens outpost in Southeast

AUGUST 29, 2011, WASHINGTON, DC - Metro Mutts announced it is opening a new location at 407 8th Street, SE.  The store will open the weekend of October 1st, and will be the company’s second location, after its flagship store at 508 H Street, NE.

The new location adds 1,000 sq. ft. of retail space for Metro Mutts, where the company will continue to carry only the highest quality pet supplies.  They will use the same meticulous approach to stocking foods they have become known for; foods pet owners can feel confident are safe and nutritious.  Dog walking and pet sitting services will also be offered at the new location.

Metro Mutts will be moving into the space of an existing pet store, Pawticulars.  “When we were first approached by Pawticulars about moving into their space, we saw it as a great opportunity to grow our business and take advantage of the commercial activity on Barracks Row,” said co-owner Lee Hartshorn.   He continued, “Our two stores have had a very cooperative relationship since Metro Mutts first opened in 2009, so this seemed like a very natural progression for us both.”  Pawticulars owner Jennifer Zatkowski echoed Hartshorn’s sentiments:  “After opening the store eight years ago, I found it difficult to devote my time to both the store and my family.  I am pleased and excited that Metro Mutts is moving into the space and am confident they will provide local customers the same attention and care they’ve come to expect.”

Between its three owners, husband and wife team Lee and Kelly Hartshorn and long-time friend Anna Lappas-Collins, the Metro Mutts team will be able to offer the same personalized, quality service at both locations that has earned the company’s products and services top marks on consumer ratings sites like Yelp!.  Metro Mutts also received recognition as the CHAMPS - Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 Retailer of the Year, an award voted on by members of the Capitol Hill community.

“We are glad to see a dynamic company like Metro Mutts expand their presence on the Hill,” said Julia Christian, Executive Director of CHAMPS – Capitol Hill ‘s Chamber of Commerce.  Martin Smith, Executive Director of Barracks Row Main Street, also welcomed Metro Mutts to the corridor: “There’s a great deal of momentum for retail right now on Barracks Row and we’re pleased to continue to make the street a destination for pet owners.”
